Basically I've got an annoying tapping from the front, think its a spring collet or something... So looking at taking a week off work over summer to do a medium-ish rebuild & uprate a few other bits...

Need...

Parts top replace
Head bolts
Head gasket
Valve Stem Oil Seals
Inlet manifold gaskets
Exhaust manifold gasket(s)
stub-bolts for exhaust manifold & inlet manifold
rocker-cover gasget
Various O-rings & oil seals (camshaft, etc...)
Cambelt

Possible bits to replace (not sure on these tbh)
waterpump (only 12k miles old)
valvesprings (uprated ones?)
Valve Spring Collets
rod-bolts (uprated)
oil pump (was new with engine, again 12k miles old)
coolant & oil feed hoses (some feel weak)

Thats the list 'off the top of my head', as this is my first-venture into rebuilding a 16v engine, it should be fun!

Also looking at replacing the restrictive induction-hosing round the back with something a little easier to breath, but not a full inlet manifold (yet)

What rod-bolts would be best to go for too?? ARP?? If so, where stock them & how much? I have downloaded the SDB pricelist, and looking through that it lists most of the parts I want, but there are so many different types, I wouldnt have a clue where to start!

Also, considering the engine is still 'fairly' standard, would it be worth getting a slight bit of headwork done aswell, given the fact I will later be adding cams, inlet manifold & exhaust manifold, and also unichip?

Just saves on another top-end rebuild when I can just swap the cams over & fit the rest of the stuff with the engine still in one piece...

I can't think of anything else...

I'd recommend that you also lap the valves in, while you have the head in bits you could remove the step at the inlet port where the valve seat is cut in, this is the main flow restriction on the head.
And when you mount the inlet on you can use RTV, I'll u2u you a link for the stuff when I get my laptop out which has the link, I use marine grade stuff, basically you get a ultra thin layer and no flow disruption, also if you taoe your time you can line the runners up the as best as possible. It's also cheaper for a tube than a gasket on it's own

Valve spring coolets- when you have the head stripped in turn, put the pair of collets form each valve on, there though be a few thou gap between them when they are pressed on to the valve firmly, if not then a bit of MDF with some high grit (smooth) wet and dry and WD40 to gentle reduce the side of each till you have a gap, this is the reason for valves dropping in to engines, as the stress of them pressing on eachother can cause them to dislodge and bang

apart form that just the timing belt, leave the rest alone.

Oh and ARP's www.raldes.co.uk are the cheapest I think around 65 for them.

Let me know if you want to knwo anymore I've got som epics I could send over

James
