I don't get why people pay that money for a camera? Unless they make a bomb by being a proffesional photographer what is the point. A camera that costs a couple of hundred max still produces good quality pictures. Personally, I bought a £60 non digital camera and am very happy going to boots and getting the film developed.

I've got a Sony DSC-V1 now and not happy with the image quality., speed of the zoom or battery life

Quality - far to much noise
Speed - When i go to rallies the camera can't zoom out fast enough to capture the cars coming towards you
Battery - Have to take 3-4 batteries with me if I'm going out for a whole day

Why the Sigma 70-200mm and not the Canon EF 75-300mm?

sigma is a f2.8 lens. it's of far better quality too. the EF 75-300 is ok but it's a fast lens

To go fast you need a lot of light so yeah, wider aperture helps. Its not essential if your're outside or in sunlight but the times when you're not you'll be thankful of it.

You also need shutter speed to help with camera shake. The rule of thumb is 1/focal length is your shutter speed, so at 300mm, 1/300 = 300th of a second. If you can't go that fast because you're at f5.6, you'll have a blurry photo unless you're well supported.

that shot of the horse was done wide open. at f5.6 I would have had to bump the iso from 800 to 3200 to get a fast enough shutter to freeze the action. once I get more cash I'll get a fast wider lens

Well the pics i took last year at the rally with the sony were taken on 1/1000 and 1/500 sec. So what you saying ian is something around <=f2.8 would be better for fast moving pics than some thing >=f5.6?

You'll still get those speeds with a narrower aperture but only if there is enough light. Overcast is a bit of a problem but you'll notice it most indoors.

So for pictures of cars in low light (forest floor) the f5.6 would be better?

f5.6 is 2 stops slower than f2.8. so at iso 100
1/400s @ f2.8
1/200s @ f4
1/100s @ f5.6

to get 1/400s @ f5.6 you would need to increase the iso number to 800 at least. this would mean an increase in noise and quality would be reduced.
