Saw this on T.V today, really bizarre. Basically somehow the cockpit window smashed, and the pilot got sucked out but he managed to grab on, and was held by his feet, and they landed the plane and he survived
anyone know if this actually happened

1990: BA pilot Captain Timothy Lancaster was sucked half-way out of his BAC 1-11 cockpit after the windscreen blew out at 23,000 feet. His legs were held by crew members until the plane landed.

cant find a video or anything

His body was probably plugging the window, stopping the rest of the crew from being sucked out

I saw a documentary about this only the other day on discovery channel. Aparantly what happened was the plane was in for repair as 1 of the front screens was cracked/damaged and the engineer who changed the glass decided to put all new bolts in as well. So off he goes to the stores and gets a bolt that was 200th of 1mm in diameter smaller then the original ones that were in there. But the ones that were already in there were the wrong size to start with as it must have been changed at some other point. So when they had taken off eventually with the bolts being downsized twice it ripped the window out and sucked him out. It was that cold that it froze his body into like a cryogenic state so when they made an emergency landing they managed to bring him back to life with no complications. And just to think they were considering letting him go cus they thought he was dead, only reason they held on was because they didnt want him clogging up one of the engines or clipping the rear tail and damaging it

A BAC 1-11 lands at around 145knots, which is about 170mph
