with the elections coming up, around the big cities etc, up here the police are starting to close off main roads down to one lane, and pull over majority of cars to search them for explosives, and terrorists etc, happening anywhere else in the country?? making the roads havoc! not just normal police though, literally hundreds of them with rifles etc

Yeah I've seen it being done in London a few times over the last few weeks as well. Mostly looking for guns, drugs, uninsured drivers, untaxed/un-mot'd vehicles, etc.
You're driving along the road and they have a white van with the CCTV cameras pointing out the back set up, checking number plates for tax, insurance, etc. and then the rozzers in the van radio down to the coppers on the road to pull whichever car is dodgy. They have traffic police sitting in a marked beemer or omega at the front to chase vehicles that refuse to stop.

They're out all the time around here, I suspect that they're more intersted in tax and insurance than bombs.

Looks like Tax and Insurance to me. I've not been pulled yet but last week i went past 3 checks in less than 2 miles to uni. Don't know if you have noticed too -- but they are pulling in the older cars.
