Last night, driving to Harrogate, the road there is for the vast majority a derestricted zone on straight country roads with a few villages with a 30 limit. The second village we came to, where there is a big 30 sign and red tarmac to slow you down i heard a large bang.
i thought it was just my exhaust popping, but a bit louder!
infact i had obviously hit something like a brick, because there are no speed bumps.
i then pulled up just out of the village after the car started losing power and then stopped. there was a massive oil slick coming from under the car, loads of smoke from under the bonnet and it wouldnt start.
it appears i have cracked the sump off and i before i look at it today, i think there is a lot of internal damage.
anyway i still absolutely caned a repmobile 3 series on the way
Moral:
dont lower your car too much if you have a big engine, the sump is too close to the ground!!
what should i do?

If the car wont turn over...

no..... it would 'start' if there is no oil..... would just grind metal against metal though.....
which i think has already been done when 'car started losing power and then stopped. there was a massive oil slick coming from under the car, loads of smoke from under the bonnet and it wouldnt start'
i think its seized already as you say it wont turn over, i take that to mean the starter isnt turning anything.... its stuck fast, or are you meaning its not 'catching' ???

You'd have thought it would of knocked your bumper off if it hit the sump? never thought about that sorta thing before though.

You plonker, sounds like a dead engine. Next time you hear a whack from underneath it will cost you 1-2 mins to just stop getout and have a look and ffs if there is a big leak then DONT drive it. I cracked my sump on a raised iron work near where I live but got out to have a look and realised oil everywhere. Mate went home and got placcy bags/duct tape and about 10 litres of oil that I had in the garage. Cleaned up the sump with rags, duck tape over the crack/dent and placcy bags and more duct tape, filled her back up and hey presto I got home fine...

The xe sumps sits below the bumper line and ARB line.... very low... i've hit mine off rocks etc before
smashed my diff casing on a F13gearbox with a rock too

Yeah obviously towed is easy if you have a mate/tow rope or breakdown cover - which I dont.

some people do this for fun, leaving bricks in the road, and even embeding them in tarmac so you cant see them.
its just stupid. think there was someone on here say that they had done it

^^^ i cant believe people do this on purpose.
anyway, just to clear things up, i didnt try driving it after! i pulled up about 300yards after i realised there was something wrong.
had a look with a torch when my dad came to tow me home and the bit where the sump plug goes is ripped clean off!
the starter does catch yes, but its stuck.
going to try turn it over manually at the crank.
tbh i think its fcuked
