essex is ok, colchester is reasonably good to go (its where i live)
but nothing special few clubs and bars thats it really!
Brunel i didnt like as was all concrete jungle!
Oxford brookes is really nice, but i chose hertfordshire where i am now, as was on a whole campus, ok not much nightlife but st albans not far away and watfrod and london are 15 minutes away!
Id say essex/oxfrod brookes

Depends what you're doing, but Essex is a good laugh (my mate went there so I went out there a lot -- easy women)... Also a top notch Politics department...
..but the most 'decent' uni on there I would say is Surrey (great for technology) or Brunel.

Brookes is good, but you pay a premium for accommodation.
The campus is now split across two main sites, Gipsy Lane and Wheatley - last I heard they were trying to move more into the sciences and engineering.
