When I stop in traffic, my idle just goes low, as I am going to stall, then sometimes its revs by its self!! What can this be???

ICV (The dreaded idle control valve). You should be getting a ecu light on though if your having problems?

Temperature sensor I think.

My 1.4 16V Sport was doing this. Would dip in traffic or when you started it in the morning so you would have to rev it so it didn't stall. Also revved by itslf sometimes.

could be a number of things but top of my list would be iddle control valve. Wouldnt bother cleaning it out as i done that to mine twice and it fucked it...just replace it with 2nd hand ones untill you find th right one. Or try and get a golf GTi one which is the same but ajustable i was told.

Another thing is could be would be an airflow meter my revs were all over the place and mine was cutting out then i replaced it. Only replaced mine again last week and its running smooth as. Only prob this is my 5 odd air flow meter my car keeps eating then

Also mentioned above was water temp switch...would be related but i rember you said your engine was reconned so may not be the problem but they only cost 15 notes and your best off replacing it anyway for pieace of mind

ICV, had to change it on both my engines. Dont bother getting a new one from vaux tho, unless you like giving away lots of money.

not alwatys my airflow went nuts and didnt register on the ECU so after chaning, injectors, plugs, leads, dizzy, new fuel filter, blew out fuel lines and a few odds and sods it turned out to be the AFM

Also just spoke to a friend of mine who had the same problem and it turned out to be the car running really lean...and IIRC you have a power boast valve?
