also on that thread:

"recon engines from vaux are about a grand + the old engine for an XE on trade club. they do all the old classics on there"

not too bad imo, might look into this.........

buy an XE or LET and spend about 1K-1.5K and it'll be sound and with uprated pistons etc etc and then you can just whack on EDS management knowing you got a bullet proof engine

Buy a Old XE take all the bits off (sensors Starter gearbox etc) then
take the old XE into Vauxhall with £1200 and they will give you a brand new XE with 0 miles

but whats the point if all you are getting is a new block? 1K for a new block is stupid IMO when you can strip one down paint it and replace everything instead with the 1K instead? for 1K you can buy oversized pistons, steel rods, arp rod boltds rebore the block etc etc and the engine will be stronger than it ever was opening the scope for tunning

well put it this way the std XE block is suposedly stronger than the LET's (so i am told) so no reason why they shouldnt be still fine now afte 'x' amount of years. Plus the ony reason i think that bloke needed a new block as due to the fact it was possibly oversized already hence once you bored out to 2.1 (max) if you score the bore you need a new block. Where as if you oversize by .50cc (like i did) it leaves a margin for problems. I would jst rebore the block to 2.1 and re-do pistons rinsg etc.

That's the benefit of buying genuine GM and not pattern parts.
If they'd been fitted by Vaux there would be no problem with warranty, but you'd have problems if any other mechanic had done the work.
