cat A means that the car and all of its parts must be crushed
cat B means parts can be salvaged but the body of the car has to be crushed
cat C and D can both be put back on the road after they have been checked over
Cat F is fire damage

this man is correct but i will clarify the Cat C and Cat D
Cat D are the best ones to go for just because they dont require a VIC check.
The Vehicle Identity Check is used on most Cat C classified cars, not all but most. This check has to be carried out at an official VIC station quite a few around the country before a V5 can be issued for the car. However they then put on the V5 that the car has been accident damaged which is obviously a pain in the ass.
So Cat D's all the way!

Sooooo, i had a ford ka which was a cat c, it came up on the hpi check when selling, but there was nothing on the V5. How did they get round that?

thats why i said most Cat C cars need VIC's not all of them do but tbh a Cat C normally means it needs a VIC.
Sounds like the Ka u had was one of those rare Cat C's that didnt need a VIC check i suppose!
and brandfincham Cat D doesnt mean that the car was massivly damaged might have just been a smashed up wing.

mine was a repaired one, cuno which cat but it seems good to me. had a bump on the back wing and that was it from what i know. found a few bits of broken glass on the floor under the chair aswell. these cars seem fine but i dont know what theyre like when you sell them on as they may lose a hell of a lot of value

Well thats how it works u buy them at a cheaper price than u would normally pay for an "undamaged" one and then when u sell it you sell it for a bit cheaper than you would do if it hadnt been damaged.
Obviously this system only really works if its got the damage recorded on the v5 otherwise many peeps just sell them as normal cars as peeps will have to do a HPI check to find out the history of the car.

I've known a few cat c's that didnt need VIC and a few cat d's that did ( one was just paint strippered so couldnt see the point in that) VIC or vehicle identity check is just that it checks the identity of the car (basically it aims to make sure its not a ringer) it doesnt check the quality of a repair or roadworthyness of the vehicle.
All cat C's from a certain date onwards appear on V5 but early ones dont. Cat D's dont appear on the V5 and you arent legally obliged to tell a prospective buyer its a cat D unless they ask you. Both cat C's and D's do both however show up on HPI checks.
