id say a 205 1.9gti aswell mate. Quite fast as standard. all you gotta spend money on after the car(make sure it half decent, eh!) is some uprated suspension and some better anchors. Theyre as important, probably more so, than the engine, cos on the track, most time is made and lost in the corners. Make sure your one of the ones making the time!

if you get a 1.9 GTi then u'll find your pretty stuck when it comes to uping bhp - id did a lot of background reading into both as i undecided on what to buy

im not just sayin this because i drive a golf but if you read up on both you'll find the 16v golf is the far better option engine wise, plus its stronger lump.

u can use a 2.0 (Corrado, Passat, Toledo, Audi 80) bottom end on a mk2 16v head and straight away have 155bhp, then do the fuel regulator mod and your talkin 170bhp setup correctly. and all cheap as chips

there is a fella who sets mine up, and he has a std 1.8 16v with just a ported/polished head and a 4 branch - and it puts out 140bhp atw's

they handle just aswell as 205gti's. and try finding a 205gti without a seized rear torsion bar - i can guarantee the only ones you will find are the ones going for big doe!

your looking for 86-89 small bumper 16v models, u can pick them up for anything between £200-750.

mileage aint a problem if properly looked after. they can go on for 200k easily, and a set of rings n bearings fitted can be done for £100 if need be.

rust. only places they rust are round the fuel filler and boot lid.

make sure it has the correct gearbox also, it'll be stamped 2Y on the bottom of the bell housing

If you are getting a 206 GTi you are better off with the 1.6. The 1.9 is not as free revving and as stated is not easy to get power gains from.
