I need a new pc, nothing fancy....only things it definately needs is pentium 4 proccesor and firwewire + windows xp


Where is the best place online to buy a basic but good system, I am looking to spend as little as possible.

theres some companies that sell on ebay and offer warranties etc. You thought about building your own? Its really not that hard and will save you a lot of money. If you are interested, have a look at http://www.ebuyer.co.uk/ thats where i get all my components from.

physically plug the bits together, check the jumpers on the drives and motherboard (drives are piece of piss, and motherboard it might be useful to look at the manual, but you might not even have to change anything), plug in the power cables, turn it on, stick the windows disk in the drive and follow the instruction.

just been having a look, looks like you can save a lot of money that way, but tbh I don't have a clue how to match the components up with each othger so it will all work :s

we just bought a new pc from dell. Its a really good pc and didn't costs that much. Its worth a look anyway

theres sites on the internet with good guides, i taught myself really quickly. You can also get really cool cases too if you build em yourself, like a clear acrylic case with loads of blue lights etc

i would go for AMD personally, i've never built an intel system. Does the £400 include a monitor?

ebuyer wont be much coop if you need to RMA stuff...

I've used Dabs, overclock.co.uk, coolercases.co.uk but to name a few & only had to RMA 1 thing which took a week to be tested & replaced

yup

Build ya own tho get an athlon XP-Mobile 2500 or 2600 chip, DFI Infinity or LanParty NFII-Ultra B board & then go crazy!

My 2600+XP is now running as an Athlon XP 4000 (2.53Ghz)

it also wipes the floor with my brother P4 3.2

I fried my dads mobo when i didnt know what i was doing once, increased the FSB on a standard computer loads and some capacitors on the board melted

The 2600 I've got is supposed to run at 1.9GHz (166x12 or something)

it's running at 220x11.5 (2530MHz, 2.53GHz)

mobile chips are best as there the best cores amd make (hand picked for better durability) aswell as being unlocked & able to run on lower voltages
