What do people on here think of the VW Golf? I'm not taking about the new model just out now but the one before that. Won't be able to insure a GTi so i was thinking of the 1.4 or 1.6. Looking at spending around 4k

You can get a corsa sport 1.6 much cheaper than a mark 4 golf!

Get yourself a corsa sport 1.6. Good, solid nippy cars and getting cheaper by the day. mk4 golfs are lardy and cumbersome, esp with the base model engines. Dont bother.

Why are you looking at the Golf? Do you need a bigger car? I have a 1.8T, and it certainly makes its extra weight and width obvious.
A good friend has a 1.6SE, and it is nearly as rapid as a 2.0 GTi....not saying much, I know. Cheaper all round to run, and as much fun.
If you don't need the space, listen to those above that recommend smaller cars with 1.6 engines. More fun per pound.
Then, when you can afford the insurance etc, buy a 1.8T, and chip it to over 200bhp and 230Ib/ft.....
