When doing an engine transplant into a Corsa, using a 2.0 16v engine that came from a Cavalier that was made before it was nevessary to have catalytic convertors into a Corsa that needs to have a catalytic convertor, where do I stand legally when it concerns fitting a catalytic convertor.

I have read loads of posts on this, and it all leads to people saying you do need one and people saying you dont need one.

I have read somehwere that all cars manufacturead after a certain date have to have one fitted. I have also read that all cars need to have one fitted if thier emissions are over a certain level. AND I have read that as there is no such thing as a 2.0 16v Corsa in the documentation provided by VOSA there is no set upper emissions limit, so the MOT people and Police can only do a basic smoke test on the engine...

Who's right

Ok

By Law, you DON'T require a catalytic converter on any car, there is no law saying this. However, there is a law which states after whenever it is (august 1992 or something) emissions on the vehicle MUST be below a certain amount, and the only way this is possible is by using a CAT or running the engine on hydrogen or something.

Alot of people make this out that its law you must have a cat.

Your right about the VOSA, there are no guides or levels as standard for corsa's with 2ltr engines, so as far as I'm aware they compare the results to the car the engine originated from, so if you CAN prove the engine is from a car prior to the new emissions laws, then in theory you shouldnt need a cat to keep the emissions down to pass. If it was after the date, then you probably will need to have the lower emissions, so will need a cat.

So long as the car the engine came out of dosnt need/have one then you dont need to fit one on the corsa

I agree with Paul W. I can prove my engine is before 92 and that's good enough for my MOT even though the car is 96. I was always under the impression if the engine is pre 92 then thats ok.

So the emission rules apply to the engine and not the car?

Now, just to make things even worse

I thought it the MOT tester went on the age of the car, not the engine.

So if the car in my case is a 85 and you don't need a CAT on car produce from 93 onwards then I am fine.

My XE came out of an F-reg astra and went into a '96 Corsa. Didnt need a cat, told them what year the engine was etc. so they didnt bother checking the emmisions. Still doesnt have a CAT, but this engine i have now, came out an L-plate cav but i know the MOT tester.

Ollie, dont tell them what engine you have in the car, just say its a 1.6

when i got mot done for jag corsa i just showed the mot centre the engine number and if it stars with i C first it needs a cat in othwise its fine, so all u need is to prove the age of the engine to the mot centre thats all ed iaz

Find out what the cars emmisions SHOULD be for the year of the car, then test what it is without ya cat on there. if its ok, i'd keep quiet about it and let it sail through the MOT. what do they need to look under the bonnet for on an MOT? cant think
