trying sort out my electrical wiring as lot of stuf wired to wrong places!!

sunroof is wired it up to the interior light!! been like that for over a year and no problems...but it opens without the ignition even on!!

thinking of wiring it to the switched-ignition on the key barrel with 20A fuse? is this ok? my Electric-windows have been wired to this also

The sunroof should be wired with a 20amp fuse - run a wire straight to a permanent live and fit an inline fuse near the battery.

im trying to sort it all out mate...maybe you can point me in the right direction then...this is how im going to re-wire everything..how does it sound so far?

Sunroof- switched live of Ignition with (20A fuse)
Windows- switched live of Ignition with (20A fuse)
LED door pins- Constant live of fuse box with (1A fuse)
Footwell neons- Constant live of fuse box with (1A fuse)

is it ok to wire multiple items as long as they are fused to the Switched live in the igniton barrel? as the wire is very thick and has high current rating

You cant take 40a worth of ignition live from the barrel mate, just take an ignition live to a 20a/30a relay, and put a 25 amp fuse inline on the power feed for the relay (chances of using the sunroof and windows at the exact same time are low, so use half the rating), and you will be fine.

ok im sort of with you mate...

wat do u mean by "relay"....

...isit, i take ONE live feed of the switched-ignition WITH its own 25A fuse on it...
this live then "SPLITS" into TWO, one with a 25A and the other with a 30A fuse? one for window and other for sunroof?

the thing is i do actually often use windows and sunroof at same time!
so how much/which fuses should i increase the ratings by?

cheers for ur help buddy

This is a relay

You run a small ignition live to the switch input on the relay, and you take a direct fused feed from your battery to the relay, and you connect the output to the lives on your devices.

oh i see, i think i understand how relays work, its like a electrical switch right? it uses a smaller current to switch on a bigger current?

so it would be best to power each device seperately using a direct fused live feed of the battery....which will run through relays which switch the power ON to the devices by conecting them to the ignition switched live

will the ingnition 12VOLT live that runs the relays have to be Fused?
if so what AMP fuse do i need to use on each relay? and how many relays can i have running on the ignition?

cheers

You can tap at least 10 small ignition lives to other relays as the switch input to turn the relay on draws very very little current, and no this wire does NOT have to be fused.

Just get a 40a automotive relay from here:

http://www.maplin.co.uk/Products/Module.asp?CartID=040731233733344&ModuleNo=6436&MR=N

Use a 40a fuse on the live that you take to the relay, and you shall be safe sir.

Just connect the lives for your leccy windows and sunroof to the switched output on the relay (these wont need fusing) and voila, you have ignition controlled windows and sunroof that is wired correctly

lol wat a coincidence, i was looking at that exact same website page earlier on maplins is ace, ive used them before

but...wouldnt it be best to use seperate live feeds and relays for each device.... as using the window and sunroof at same time draws max of 40A, any more and fuse will blow(short), which is fine...
but using them seperatley will only draw half the current, 20A? and if a short happend the fuse wont blow?? as it needs to exceed 40A before it blows??

should i wire the relays in a Series circuit or Parallel, or does it not matter?
and were is the best place to earth the relays?

thanks for all the help mate, im gonna have a go 2moro at fixing it all up

If a short happened, trust me the fuse would still blow. To prove this i had a small flashing LED hooked up to a 15 amp fuse, and i shorted the positive out on the chassis and it blew the 15 amp fuse.... and thats for a 300mA LED!

If your that worried about it, just put two 20a fuses after the relay on your lives for your windows and sunroof. You only need the one relay, so series and parallel wiring doesnt really apply. Why would you want to wire in series and half the voltage?

And you can earth the relay on any closest bolt on the chassis using a ring connector

oh i see, i just wanna be on safe side, u scarred the shit out of me since u said my car could burn to the ground!

ok so a single relay for the leccy windows n sunroof running on 40A is fine

when you say use two 20A fuses "after" the relay...is that ONE 20A on sunroof live and ONE 20A on window live both after the relay?

and... woudnt it be safer to fuse the live near the battery under the bonnet? as to fuse it after the relay i will have to put the fuses in the fuse box as thats were im going to put the relay?

cheers

Yes this is right.

Yes you should definatly fuse the live feed that you take to the relay as close to the battery as possible with a 40a fuse.

oh i get ya, so i fuse it under the bonnet aswell with 40A and then twice after the relay for sunroof and windows with 20A each to be on safe side

and when i said about the parallal or series circuit i meant for the live switch current for if i used mutiple relays? not the live current operating the devices?
