My mate welded the plate over, then used expanding foam to fill the space behind it, smoothed it all over and job done

was the plate welded right to the edge of the recess or a small gap left ? wot about the fact that the boot curves in and therefore metal has to be bend to the shape of the boot

You need to spot weld a piece of 1.2mm thich steel over the recess for the lock and numberplate, then put fibreglass matting over it for strength and shape, smooth off with filler like shown above and the use high build primer or blocker to get rid of imperfections (any big ones use more filler)

Make sure you remove all the paint from the whole bottome section of the boot, and you have to re-spray the whole tail gate too - including the inside, as the welding process will melt loads of paint off.
