depends how much hardener you put in it.

Between 30 mins and 24 hours id say.

If it is tacky after 48 u didnt use anything like enuff hardner, or you didnt mix it properly.

P40 will remain slightly tacky for ever, as the resin part of the composite is polyester based, when It cures it will have a slight stick to it, unless it is mixed with a flow coat or wax soloution, as you do when laying up the last glass fibre laminate.

if its hard, and doesnt clog the paper too much when you sand it, its cured properly.

hope this helps.

thanks will, 600 grit wet/dry paper will shape it ok wont it, and remove the orange peel effect off the piece, then what type of filler primer would you recommend i use to go over this?

you will need to use something like 80 or 120 grit on fibreglass or you will be there forever, you only use 600 grit for finnishing filler.

the top layer is still tacky because it actually takes 6 weeks for all of the styrene to release from the resin - however it set to "touch harden after about 30 mins to a few hours

I wouldnt try sanding it - if u have to - uve used to much - skim with P40 to bridge whatever it is ur doing - then skim over that with a fine layer of p38 filler- and sand the filler flat
