No there are only 4 makes roughly of CD-RW drives that read 700 and above discs. This applies to DVD-RW as well. I have some 99min 870mb discs here and they are useless for anything over 700mb as my drive does not support this feature.

Hey, the sony drive is actually a lite-on drive just rebadged! If the firmware on the Sony site dont work u could risk it and use the lite-on firmware update. That should work

Did no-one read my post, it's nothing to do with firmware it's the manufactures drives. There is again about 4 makes and models that will accept CD's over 700mb. I am not talking about overburn.

Hope this helps shed some light, copied form a website I buy my PC goodies from (17" TFT Monitor just arrived!!:thumbs

quote:

It appears (from my extensive browsing) to be mechanically identical to the Sony DRU 510a with a different bezel and some performance features crippled in the firmware. It appears that these can mostly be fixed however.

Check out the drive reviews and forums at www.dvdrhelp.com for instructions on the possible fixes and where to find them. At the very least they will help you get the drive running with a much broader selection of DVD media but I found a patch which worked for me and had some magical side-effects which made the drive a real bargain. (I'll say no more!)
