User Comments: A worthless and pointless addition to the horror genre
What exactly is the point of movies like "Long Time Dead"? What are the investors and producers thinking when they get such a movie? I can't fathom it.
Firstly the story-line and characters are atrocious. We have a bunch of "mad" young people who like to go out and do "cool things" in night clubs. To show just how hip they all are they do drugs and dance to flashing light sequences and thumping music. So basically the same as every Brit flick ever there - each character trying to have an edge but only ending up being irritating. That's just as well because - shock! horror! - they all start dying mysteriously after messing with a Ouija board. My God killing your cast off one by one - how original! The worst bit being I guessed correctly every twist and turn of the movie. How dull.
I think the acting deserves a bit of a mention here. The Academy can rest easy in that they won't be doing the world an injustice by not considering this film for nomination. Someone ought to teach the cast about the concept of over-acting because it's done to cringe-inducing effect here (and actual laughter from the cinema audience I was with). The actors don't even invest enough ability into their roles for me to able to distinguish their characters. I ended up just waiting for their performances to stop in the form of a corpse.
Finally the directing is poor too. The "scares" are consistently produced solely through the use of a (very) traditional horror movie score: make the cellos go faster and then counterpoint them with a loud noise. That's it. No use of other directorial techniques such as cinematography or lighting - the "scare" is just a tired old musical trick and feels almost painful.
"Long Time Dead" is not the worst movie ever but it does not merit a cinema release. It feels, acts and plays like a straight-to-video feature and is instantly forgettable. Don't waste your time on this one.
