Ford’s new Fiesta RS concept, unveiled at Geneva, is the third in a series which also includes the recently announced Fiesta ST and the Junior WRC car which is due to make its international rally debut in June. They all hark back to the original RallyeConcept Fiesta.
It’s fairly obvious that Ford means to go ahead with the RS project, although TeamRS director Jost Capito says, "We aren’t going to finalise technical specifications until we hear the feedback from potential customers."
The Geneva car, developed in collaboration with German engineering specialist Bertrandt, carries over several features from the RallyeConcept - a low stance, 18" alloys, wide wheel arches, a stand-out rear spoiler and dramatic front-end cooling vents among them. With a track about 20mm narrower than the more extreme JWRC car, the RS shares its white ceramic-coated brake calipers.
It has a two-litre engine based on the Mondeo unit, although a customer RS would be likely to have a figure around 180bhp as the target power output, and a 0-60mph time close to seven seconds.

Assuming that it does get the nod, the RS could be in production by the end of 2005. Capito says that if the company builds both the ST and the RS, "That will demonstrate how two distinct Ford performance brands can complement our mainstream models."
