points last for 3 years on your insurance but most insurance companies ask about your past 5 year history

Points stay on your license for 4 years, but don't count for insurance after 3.

OK so as I got 3 points in November 2001, when do I apply to have them removed from my license - November 2004 or November 2005?

fucking hell 4 years? I thought it was only 3... no wonder there are so many people driving without insurance ... many people will have probably got banned in the space of 4 years and can't afford not to drive - they don't give insurance to people without a license and hence the nasty cycle begins...
It's far too easy to get points on your license these days, with millions of speed camera's, many white mobile vans, plus the normal patrol units...
in the old days, it'd be rare to be done for doing say 34 in a 30 - you'd have to be seen doing excessive speed for a police officer to pull you over and thus u would get the points...
now it's just too easy to get points, but a bitch to get rid of them... the whole system is screwed.
I wonder how many people have been banned these last couple of years - many I expect...

I totally agree with you, the maximum points that you can recieve needs to be increased.

I read in the paper about some new GPS system - which basically tracks everyones car (like road angel's tells u your exact speed via gps) - It knows what the speed limit is in that area and as soon as u exceed it you get points / fine!!!
If they did bring that system in, I would guarentee that in the first week of operating over 1 million people will be banned from driving
The thing is, we all speed at some point... even if its only a couple of mph over the limit.
At this rate, with the increase of camera's and mobile vans - sure their earning emselves a nice profit, but are taking the piss out of the system.
In the old days it was like - you had to be doing something like 50 in a 30 to get done for speeding or properly booting it on the motorway, now a old grandad who is a bit slow in the head and thinks its 40 mph and is quite happily do 37 mph through a camera gets points...
This aint no boy racer or anything - its just a normal civilian... all those pussy's that fell for all that 'yeh speed cameras will be put in crash hotspots and its all for everyone's safety' - are now getting done on the way to do some shopping, or down a steep hill where you have to put the brakes on hard to stop the car going through a camera over 30 mph!!
It's all a complete joke. Either punishment will have to go down, i.e. fine but no points on smaller penalties and only points if your really flying along - or the system is gonna fall apart.

Police are slack on dual carriageways motorways now tho. My dad went past them at 81mph the other day. I'd say you'd only get done if you were travelling over 85mph. And as for speed cameras, the ones round here are set for 77/78mph. Thats if they even have film in then. At one point in tayside there were 2 with film in them.
