How does a torque converter actually multiply the torgue of the engine?

Cant get my head round this at all.

You gain torque and loose distance. You don't get anything for nothing!

"Gearing" is a very short undescriptive answer. How does it actually work?

Is it not a kind of turbine where fluid plays a part.

So what your saying Ian is basically its a reworking of the simple equasion

Torque = Force x Distance
Speed


Right know how its achived now, but what actually happens mechanically inside or just infront of the AT?

IN a way yes your right vibs but Im talking about the actual unit that links the driveplate to the auto box.
