what is it? and how much did it cost? after driving some turbo deisels i now love tourqe, but i know that the 1.6 and 1.4 16valvers stuggle to make decent tourqe, so what mods would improve it, rather than bhp?

your never going to gain much torque over std....

TB's etc will give you some...

cams just really move the power band up the rev range.

There is no subsitute for CC

I've almost got xe torque out of my 1.6.

But with the smaller engine I have more torque/ton that I would have with a 2.0 conversion.

Admittingly I would have got that torque lower down the rev range with a 2.0 though.

if you really want torque why not just buy a td corsa, you can get 100 bhp from them for 15 quid. they embarrase sri's like that and are marginally quicker than 1.4 16v. there is loads of stuff for them, my td should be running 130 bhp this time next year, and for what cost, 20 quid on a ball bearing boost controller, 50 on induction kit, 15 quid on intercooler, 21 quid on gasflowed cylinder head and about 50 quid on full zoorst, admittidly i do it all myself but i got most of the stuff of ebay really cheap. so for say 300 quid cos there is other bits i need you can almost double the bhp and torque.

I think my car has 1.67lb/ft torque (maybe at a push 1.7lb/ft!!) - but its a C anyway.

People go on and on about torque, but it doesn't tell the whole story. A car that makes less torque but revs higher can produce MORE effective torque at the wheels with the right gearing. So while Kris's 1.5 TD makes 132lb/ft at 2500rpm and JRs 1.4 petrol might only make around 80lb/ft at 2500rpm, rev higher and things look different. Using the appropriate gearing JRs 107lb/ft at 6000rpm can be translated into 256lb/ft of effective torque for the same road speed, whereas a diesel car is producing virutally no torque at this rev range

Torque is of consequence without adequate power.

Torque is the ability to do work, power is the speed it can be done at.

Gearing is a torque multiplier (as just stated) so a lack of torque can be made up by gearing,

A lack of power cannot be made up by gearing.

Agreed andy, yeah deisels are ok for low down torque and very useable but it runs out of puff higher up rev range.

Diesels are of even less use than people think.

Oblivious to most people too is once your car is moving, you want less torque and more horsepower to maintain a high speed. This is because horsepower is a measurement of work done and includes a time element.

Torque is a measure of twisting force ONLY. Torque includes no concept of motion or time, without power torque is of little use. Low torque can always be made up for by gearing....as in a guy with little turning force being able to go quick on a pushbike.

Some great explanations above, there are many diesel that have a lot of torque that I have races with, eg. Passat TDI etc, they are about as quick as my close ratio geared 8v SRi, but the big difference is that they have to change gear when they are at 4,000-4,500 rpm (I think!) whereas my Corsa can keep its gear untill 6,500 rpm, the engine may not be pulling as well as it could in a different part of the rev range, but I dont have to change gear as much as a diesel, hense my petrol car has more time with the wheels been driven! Hope that explains it! I live over in Corley (outside Cov) BTW, drive a L reg Black SRi 8v, with gold wheels!

Yeah and how much have u spent on your engine.

If Kris was to spend that kind of amounts he would have stupid amounts of power and torque!!!

For £100 hes nearly got as much torque as u already.

I also agree with this.

But, the best example i can give.

Golf GTi vs Golf GTi TDi.
Both 150bhp, TDi has a lot more torque.

Spend £x amount on getting the relevent chips that you can get to madly increase power, and watch the torque of the TDi go through the roof.

I never liked diesels until my best friend bought one. Other than chugging along, i can't fault it. Bags of torque, but as said, it does run out of puff

Don't think you get the point Daimo - he's got nearly as much torque as me, but only at very low revs and through a relatively rev band, which translates into fcuk all power and therefor fcuk all acceleration. And if Kris was to spend the £5K I've spent on his diesel engine, he'd be daft, full stop

£15 actually havent fitted the other stuff yet.
but then i have less than half the bhp andy does, lol.
gearing lets me down though and having a narrow power band.
i would be able to get 150 bhp from my engine but it will require getting some custom parts made up. probably more but that requires nos and compremises reliability.

however i know of a guy running a 1.9 tdi with 225 bhp. it started life in a mk3 golf 90 bhp version. thats not got nos either, and its mechanically controlled like the corsa td engine is.

has a custom 4 branch manifold fuel pump, huge injectors etc...

im hoping for 130 bhp once i get my massive intercooler, gas flowed head, bigger injectors and straight through exhaust on, its just a case of finding time when the weather is good

i meant if you compare the torque figures of a astra 2l turbo gsi then say a bmw 320d the td has loads more standard even though it sacrifices about 50 bhp
