Was almost constant flashes of lightning, so set my SLR on 30 second exposure and let rip. Here's the results...

What does 30 second exposure do? Capture what happens in the 30 seconds then put it all in 1 photo kind of thing?
I have absolutely no idea about camera settings and photography... i just point and click

Nice pics

30 second exposure means the sensor is exposed to light coming through the lens for 30 seconds, so yeah what you said is basically right

Cool. Always fancied trying my hand at a little lighthing photography, but only ever seem to get sheet lightning these days.
I've only ever seen proper lightning bolts once or twice...

Quite a few times I never saw the bolts, they only showed on the pictures afterwards. If you get a thunderstorm, aim your camera at the brightest areas and hit the shutter, you might pick something up.

Most of my best ones were from when the storm had passed over me as you can see up and over the clouds.

If you haven't had a go at astro photography give it a try. 20 or 30 second exposures against a dark (cloudless!) sky, you'll be amazing at how many stars appear versus what you can see.
