I know this isnt really the way to do it but say you see a car on ebay all looks good, you pay a deposit with paypal like they ask.
Then when you go to collect the car doesnt match the description can you get your paypal deposit back with a bit of hassle

in theory you coudl raise a dispute but depends how big of a deposit it is?
paypal always favors the buyer but for me the decision would be based on the value of the deposit

I'd imagine you would be fine with PayPal provided you asked the buyer to send you an invoice for the deposit.
This way it will have the auction details in the payment details so you're covered if the "item is not as described"

You don't pay a deposit when buying a car privately from Autotrader, so why would you do it over Ebay? I guess the most deposit he was entitled to ask for is the cost for re-listing the item in case you do a no-show. Any more and I'd be saying jog on.
