if you drive a 2.0tdi 140 or above you will be surprised at just how well they drive, ok 1st gear is a let down but trust me on the move they are far from slow

The talk of 170mph+ with just a remap are quite frankly ridiculous.
IMO you would need 350+ bhp and probably about 4/5 miles of road to get close to that.

140 is a better drive than the 170 for the PD engines

Agreed. A remapped 3.2 A3 will not do over 170mph. Simples. End of.

I think the opposite after driving several 140 over the past few years and owning a 170 for 2 years now. 140 runs out of puff more like a traditional diesel where as the 170 keeps pulling well to the redline and feels more responsive. 140 is better on fuel though. Remap is meant to transform the 140 but I haven't driven one thats had it done.

think the 170 is all or nothing
very unrefined and not that much difference between the 2
the common rails are meant to be much much better

The common rails are. My Dad got a 143 common rail about a year ago and its much better than his old 140PD, very refined. Quite a bit faster too!
