4x4 system has a few weak points, most common being the viscous centre differential, VCD I think which can sieze and give you permanent four wheel drive. Which sounds nice but it stresses the other diffs and they will fail prematurely. You can tell by reversing on a full lock on lose ground, the rear wheels will skip if it is locked.
1.8 petrol is notorious for head gasket problems. Diesel engines are better, TD4 from 2001 is the best although mine had an intermittent fuel pump which would occasionally mean it wouldn't start.
I liked mine, my mum still has one and they're a very useful car but most LR forums will not really recommend them as a hassle-free purchase. The bits aren't cheap and the type of things which fail are not generally fixable at home.

dont like the older discovery and the freelander is quite alot cheaper it will be only used for the dogs, maybe a couple of times a week when i take them out walking to the country park afew miles away and take them to ring craft, cant get a crate in my car for them and they defo dont fit in the car with the kids in

I'd just get a nice estate car if I was you, freelanders handle like boats and WILL go wrong. My mom's got one and it's had an endless list of faults, and a friend had a petrol one which was nothing but trouble until she had to sell it to webuyanycar.com with a broken clutch, brakes, suspension and engine. Estates will be easier for the dogs to jump into as well as they're a bit lower and will give better economy as well. You'll only need a 4x4 if you're going off road a lot or towing something heavy.

My mate had one. Had no end of problems. She actually took it back to land rover and cancelled her payments (was on finance)

my dad/mum have a 2002 2.0 turbo diesel one. very nice with full leather and all the usual stuff.
it did go wrong last xmas though and took months to fix and cost 1800 quid iirc.
injectors were over 200 quid each
