Come on Damien, there is no way I would leave it 20k until changing the oil on a VXR, 10k max.

thats pretty stupid as oil still breaks down after about 8kish anyway.
Why do Astra VXR's have a 20,000 mile service interval then (remembering its a high spec Vauxhall 2.0 Turbo engine....)
My bikes's are every 4k, but if it doesn't break down till 8k, why change it?
Tbh, i don't think i've ever heard that in my life, ever.....

Its because it saves people money higher service intervals means more likely to buy.
Your bike revs higher than most engines, so more wear and more metal particles in the oil = more wear.
I've seen it a million times, there is plenty of companies that can test your oil for you by post.
Vag long life servicing can range from 8k-18k mileage, which ive regulaly seen them do

Its driver dependant i suppose. If you're only doing motorway miles then 20k between oil changes would be fine, and i bet the oil would still have plenty of life left in it. However 200 miles of nurburgring abuse would shorten its life considerably and id want to change it as soon as i got back.
We used high grade sheer stable ester based synthetics in our race bikes, but it was changed after every outing regardless of how much life was left in it. No point chancing an engine on the fact the oil 'should still be good' when an oil change is far cheaper than an engine change!

The reason for gearbox/ diff oils last long is because they generally don't get as high temps as engine oil, which heat cycles the oil and breaks it down.
Also engine oil gets very slight fuel and antifreeze in it which breaks the oil down especially new engines.
Just seen a new engine with 3000miles on it and the viscosity was supposed to be between 72-78 and it was 65 only after 3k miles.

I'd put money on a modern engine lasting to 40k+ without an oil change and having no adverse affects, as long as it had oil in it.

Mine went to around 18,000 before it had its first service. Telling me it doesn't need its second one till 36,000
Some people on the Audi forum still get it changed every 10-12k. Must just like wasting money

Someone I know did about that sort of mileage in a 1.4 16v Sport without changing the oil and it was fine. Not saying I would do it though

GM.... i think its Chevloret have developed a sealed unit engine that does not need fluid changes that is good for 100,000 miles and is then replaced with a new unit. Honda also have the same technology but neither will put it into production as the loss of revenue they get from service items and spare parts would cripple them.

suppose it doesn't really matter if you aren't keeping your car for years, but I think it will start sounding buggered around 100k miles.

on getting the car from new you tend to get the option
variable or fixed
On the TT is was variable although i didn't do the miles or driving to warrent it - would have been better fixed
The VXR has 20k intervals
The BMW is vraibale
first time did 18k, then 19k and I thrash it to death

You can change it from variable to fixed and back with vagcom, it's just the oil they use that's different.

As standard new they come as variable unless you ask them to have it on fixed servicing
