One of my mates has got a redtop but its not been registered so is been insured as a 1.6 16v Sport. What insurance group are these normally classed and is the insurance expensive? I know it will vary on different circumstances just wanting to know roughly.

It's based on the car the XE or LET came out of mate.

Cav SRi, Calibra, Astra GSi etc

Insurance (when legally registered) will be the car the engine came from I believe? Which is why many people prefer the engines out of the Cavaliers rather than the Calibra

Insurance is a 'how long is a piece of string' question.

insurance isnt that bad on a xe, let, theres no point insuring it as a 1.6, as your just driving around with no insurance.

No need to register it as a 2.0 as the tax for the 1.6 and 2.0 are the same so you're not commiting fraud.

But...You should insure it as a 2.0.

As bad as it is, leaving it a 1.6 on the book will make it much easier to sell on in the future.

of course thats commiting fraud the size of the engine will be different to what the logbook states! no matter what tax band its in.

if you dont declare it and tell your insurance company, you have invalid insurance fact,

you when you smash into joe bloggs, you'll have no insurance and could well end up in court and be really out of pocket

I insured my old let as a 2.0 Turbo with Flux but was still registered as a 1.6 on the book.

I'd be telling them it came out of a Cavalier no matter what rather than sourcing a Cavalier engine specifically tbh.
