Whos had one? Any common problems? Should I have any reason to suspect a 100k mileage example would be a terrible buy? Whats the differences between the normal 3.2 and the evo model? And finally, opinions on them?

Can only give you my opinion as I'm not sure on the others... but they're very dated now. I'd much prefer an E46, but I'd prefer an B6 S4 over that one instead.

The 3.2 is the Evo I believe where you get 6 gears, and then you have the 3.0 with 5 gears which is what I had.
For me it was a lardy car to drive, and after the initial impulse period had passed I totally regretted buying the thing.

things to look out for: Rust around the rear arches and undernieth, Vanos (especially around 100K)
3.2 Evo: 321 BHP, Twin Vanos (variable valve timing) Digital climate control, heated leather, 6 speed gearbox some have SMG.
3.0 Non Evo: 290 BHP (0.1 sec slower to 60) 5 speed gearbox which is stronger. Single Vanos (Rarely break down but still do) Still come with the same leather trim but not heated.
They both have no TC and a LSD as standard and are a handfull if driven enthusiasticly, people say that they look dated etc. IMO it depends what you want the car for! I personally love them and im currently looking to get another one.
My mate has recently sold his and got a 350BHP Evo 5 and its now up for sale becuase he wants to go back to an M3
I bet you wont find anything as powerful, nice looking, fun, well built, for the same money as what you can get an E36 M3.
Test drive one and see what you think!
