You have it right

If you dont load the rings up sufficiently during running in then they dont seal properly and the engine ends up creating less power and uses more oil.

We did it with 2 RSV's we sold from new, one was our demo bike which was run in on a trackday and the other was sold to a customer who ran it in by the book (keeping it under 6k untill 1000 miles)

Demo bike was 9bhp more than the customers bike when we had them dyno run.

But its the first 20 miles that make the most difference, if you pootle about in the first 20 miles you need to re ring it and start again.

PS its also worth noting that all new engines are bench tested at the factory, meaning they are revved to the limiter in each gear prior to being sent out to dealers....

i went to nurburgring and back clocked just under 1200miles and my average mgp was 27.4 in my LCR a tad under 300bhp

This running in debate as I've discussed so many times was proved by pb mag, 2 brand new engines, one run in, and one given death, the death one made more power after 2k miles but when tetsted till death it only lasted 80% as long as the one run in like manufactures suggusted

Im doing what the book says not what people on the interweb say.. it cost me a pretty pennie and i dont want anything to go wrong.
Engine wise no its fine.. just everything that the engine is connected to needs a little TLC for the run in period.

My Alfa data log's in the ECU, hence me keeping it below 3k for the first 1k or so.

Glad your pleased with it Steve, all these people saying give ti death from cold and 7 miles on the clock i bet wouldn't acutally do it if they had just forked out for a car

Your an idiot if you give it death from cold, any engine thrashed from cold is asking for trouble. Its not so much about giving it death to the limiter either - the idea of the perfect break in is the engines always under constant load with an equal number of hard acceleration bursts as engine braking periods, although warming it up first is mandatory.

I would do it, ive done it with every engine ive rebuilt for myself. Besides if anything goes wrong in the first 1000 miles it would have done it if you drive it properly or like a pussy, its what the warrantys for!

Every single car I've ever driven/owned has been warmed up PROPERLY (not just water temp, oil temp as well) before any form of "death" happens.

My new motor is my everyday car, I'm not fussed if it looses a couple of horses. If I wanted power i wouldn't have downgraded in size or got a diesel.

I'll have a weekend car for that soon enough I hope

i done it to mine, and it works.

i wait 'til it's warmed up most of the time, but only because it limits the power avaiable for the first minute when it cold started.
