They will add on a few things to make it appear it was harder than it actually was, the inflated normal prices vary between £350-500.

Does smoke coming from the block somewhere, cutting out when starting, cut out once at traffic lights, indicate the HG has gone?

No smoke, just steam, getting in the hot zone on your water temp is a good indication, steam out the exhaust etc...

sludge in oil, or sludge in expansion tank.... heating up and excessive steam from exhaust... ja
doesnt sound like a HG from your description.
