Right im looking for a new car, just broke up with the missus after 4 years  and i need to cut down all my out goings to a bare minimum, i currently drive a saxo vts, it constantly pickes up new problems, they are only little things but the car on whole has just been unreliable when ive needed it the most. It also tends to do 30ish mpg maybe even into the 20s at times
So im not looking for a reliable motor, thats maybe abit newer (saxo is a W plate) im kinda scared of the newer cars. Need it to be able to do 35 at least really, so im not constantly filling up like i tend to be in the sax. Dont need anything big by all means, but it does need to be abit nippy to keep me interested, and if im honest able to be tarted up abit in the future. Handling is my love for cars after having the saxo i need summat that will keep its grip, and throw into corners now and then.
So far ive been thinking of these baring in mind my budget
- Toyota Yaris VVTi (whatever the sportest one is)
- Seat Arosa TDi (milk up the mpg, thoughts of remapping already enter my mind)
- Madza mx5
- Corsa Sport 1.6 (thinking abit old these days unless could find a 99/2000 for cheap, wouldnt spend £2000 on one!!)
- Summat german, any ideas???
- Summat convertable...yet reliable???
Any past experiences or ideas would be great, not too afraid of diesels hench the seat arosa in there, but do perfer the rev happiness of a little petrol engine..£3000 is the VERY VERY max budget..closer to £2000 perferred

out of your list I'd say arosa TDI or even a Diesel Polo, german build quality cant go wrong on MPG either

will checkout the speed of them...dont think i specified very well...could do with a nice...i dunno 9 seconds to 60 being the slowest i cud downgrade to

YAris T-sports are quite pricey, not sure they will be in the buget, although they are meant to be well reliable, fairy nippy etc.

There are a couple on AT that fit in the budget (just). And they are quick for what they are (quicker than a 1.6 Sport ). 103bhp and they are cheap to insure! Feel a bit top heavy, but everything feels solid inside. Also as reliable as a mountain

reliablity is the the key really...going to checkout the polo's abit polo Gti's rare of summat? dont see alot of them, and not sure they are in the budget. Yaris seemed cool since i heard they only weigh 950kg...hehe thats cool like! abit bubbly though, i can live with that really. This car is kinda a stop gap til i relise what ive got to spare while renting alone! scariness

I have a Yaris T-sport and it does weigh that, mainly because it's teeny tiny. Mine has never gone wrong yet and Ive put 12000 miles on the clock in the last year. Just general wear and tear, ie tires etc. It is really nippy for what it is and has an excellent notchy gear box. It does sound a bit like a hairdryer though . As for handling, I do find it very top heavy. I think you would have to lower it to get the sort of handling you want, and I have heard from many folk that handling is improved considerably when lowered. If you want subs, sound system etc, you'l have to take into account that there practically is no boot space at all, its tiny. You'd fit maybe 8 shopping bags max. I average out at 42 mpg, and i do all town driving and very rarely motorway. When on the motorway it does sound like the car could do with a 6th gear.
Can't think of anything else at the moment other than that you can get one for about £2900 at the min but the have mileage of 80,000+
