How can you really tell a good one from a bad one? Ive been quoted 450+vat at Renault to respray a door and blend it with the front wing and rear quarter, so essentially spraying the side of the car. I did go to another approved garage and got quoted about 330 but it was a bit cowboy. Following that I visited another, this was a lot more professional in apprearance, they told me the garage that just quoted me they had to rectify work from. This is a bodyshop recommended by Renault in dover as an approved bodyshop. Im still awaiting a quote from the last bodyshop but hoping its good, they were very profesional and friendly, they even had a brand new TT RS in, being a vag garage. Despite their professional approach, how can I guarentee though the will do a good job. I suppose a 30 year warranty on paint is better than a 3 year warranty the previous garage offered...

approved bodyshops are more expensive as they mainly do insurance stuff so bump up prices. some approved ones are also shite in my experience. back alley ones are better.

Its literally just paint, but it wil be removing a door, stripping it down, masking it off, materials, etc

Ive used a few places now over the years. The best one was the approved VW place that I was reccomended for my golf. Its always full of high end cars, Porcshes, Lotus, BM's merc's. Hes a bit dearer than most but his work is second to none & to me you cant put a price on good workmanship!!

The last place I visited, the profesional one, is an approved VAG bodyshop. I get a good vibe, if the price is right il be very tempted. Like I say, they had a TT RS in when I visited. 30 warranty is peace of mind as well. How much should I be paying though really for that amount of work is what im asking myself.

On my M3 I got the top section of the drivers door (from rub strip up), and 3/4 resprayed blended into the rear arch and paid £300 + VAT.
That was in the approved VAG place I use. The work speaks for itself. It needed to be done where a repair (theft attempt by looks of things) had been done by a previous owner & wasnt up to standard, its perfect now you wouldnt know it had paint if I didnt tell you.
You get what you pay for as with everything in life.
