right, so. remove the lock and have a bit of rope hanging out then 
the lock mech is shot.
but the release rod is ok

my boot wasnt operable from the outside so the tester told me to leave the boot open, therefore he didnt need to use any mechanism to get in

Mine was smoothed off on the corsa, you couldnt open it from the outside, passed the mot 
Then again, he might have just poked the zip tie out from inside thinking about it

It only has to open! does not matter how as long as the shuts and boot floor can be checked for corrosion!
