sequential is with a paddle shift or single lever used to select the next gear, usually straight cut for racing as well, dog boxes are old hat iirc

i was about to say not all sequential boxes make the loud noise do they? its only the straight cut ones that do.

any benefit to having a sequential box (not straight cut) on a road car?

and before anyone thinks i have lost my mind i dont intend to buy one for the ibiza

straight cut boxes make the noise.
Dog boxes have dog engagement, but are still sequential.
sequential boxes are sequential with syncromesh.

the push/pull boxes can be either the dog box or sequential and also both can have flappy padels as long as there is hydraulics to do it for you.

or with peugeot they have a manual gear and a wiper motor controlling auto

Sequential gearboxes are better for racing as you dont need to use the clutch on the up shift as all the gears are already meshed and spinning at the same time. You still need the clutch on the downshift though.

The whining comes from straight cut gears (reverse is usually straight cut hence the whining) and the advantage of these is that they are much better at handling high torque loads.

also you have less gear power loses through the drive

The gears them selves last as long as any gearbox but on the syncro sequential the syncros needs replaced every so often and on the dog boxes they don't last very long at all as the "dogs" need replaced, they are just lumps of metal that literly get rammed into the output shaft to engage the gear.

...well not the actual shaft but a big lump of metal with holes in it at the end that the dogs fit into.

Tiptronic is awesome my 5th gen prelude has it.Only shit thing is it takes about a second to grab the gear once you,ve shifted up.Coming down the box is almost instant tho.

Sequential boxes are where you shift in sequence, like a motorbike!

Straight cut gears are what make the loud whining noise.

And a dog box generally means its got no synchromesh (you have to double-de-clutch) and to add to confusion there is a Log leg box but this is just to do with the shift pattern being open and over (instead of down) from 1st to 2nd like the shape of a dogs legs funilly enough!

I think the idea is that you will be between 2nd and 3rd more commonly, 1st just being out the way as a starting gear - track use I presume.

I once drove a bus with a dog leg box.

Also Escrot RST's have Dog legs.
