Ive just got a new job in Manchester which means I will be doing a 65 mile round trip each day to work (mainly motorways)

I have just sold my Astra sport hatch diesel because I fancied a change and was still working local at the time but now I need a diesel again and dont fancy the same car.

The two that spring to mind are a Golf GT Sport TDI 170 and an Audi A3 S-Line 170 but there must be more out there

The criteria is:

3 door
Sporty looking
150bhp or above
Diesel
Preferably a bit of kit as standard (e.g. full/half leather, climate, cruise, alloys, etc)

I am willing to spend up to about £14k and would ideally like one with some warranty left

Any ideas ]

A3 feels and looks more special than the Golf even though the basics are the same. Thats not to say the Golf is a bad car.

What reg is your A3 matty? Something like that would be ideal and yours is a cracking example (although I fancy Ibis White or Dolphin Grey if I can find one)

Also, I thought my Astra sounded quite loud on tick over, etc (even for a diesel) Do you notice it much on the A3 or is it quite a quiet diesel?

I got it new on a 57 plate. Ibis White seems to be the colour to go for on Audis at the moment

Its not that bad on tickover really, nothing like as loud as the 140 engine or people that have Focus diesels at work. I dont know how loud an Astra diesel is in comparison. Its certainly not as quiet as the new common rail diesels.

I like it. Nothing else took my fancy thats similar, Golf came closest but like I say its generally just not as nice so spent the extra on the A3. Someone told me the 140 was the engine to go for but once I had a go in the 170 I realised that was tosh and glad I went for it Driving 140s as courtesy cars since has only reinforced that too

Around 06 plate onwards is a must with the S-line as its when they brought in the S-line bumpers and spoiler rather than just an S-line grille on the Sport bumper like they originally did.

Also the later the reg the more likely it is you will get full leather. Around 07 plate it came as standard. (the facelifts that came out in Aug/Sep 08 went back to half leather as standard)

Only problem with Ibis White is trying to find one in my budget

They only really came into fashion 2008 so trying to find one on a 06, 56 or 07 is extremely difficult

Don't write off a 120d yet. I'm not sure on your budget but there will be some out there, I'm sure of it. The newer engine which probably won't be in your budget is fantastic.

Worth a look on AutoTrader if nothing else.

Although it hasn't got the credentials of a VAG, you thought about a new Focus Titanium or something. You'll get one with loads of warranty remaining for £14k.

What about going for something bigger like an Insignia?

What put me off those was the styling Cant fault the rest of them though.

E92 3 series Coupe was quite a lot more than I wanted to spend at the time too or I'd of got that.

Very impressed by the Mk5 Golf Gt Tdi 140

some serious abuse was given to this car and it just kept asking for more, amazingly it was still economical first gear appears to have no power other then that a great car

I used to work as a salesman for VW so rate the MKV Golf very highly. Will be test driving the A3 this weekend to see how it compares

i drove a golf GT once at my old workplace, thought it was a run of the mill diesel, but was pleasantly surprised, they go like shit off a shovel, did give some beans over the course of the drive, one of the smoothest torque bands iv felt out of diesel- loved it
