Just done the VXR driving day at Rockingham this morning, and my god is that the best £120 I've ever spent!

Got to drift a VXR8 round a wet skid-pan, do an autotest in a Corsa VXR then thrash a Corsa, Astra and VXR8 around the Rockingham international circuit.

The VXR8 was easily the best car - that engine noise is incredible
Astra was my favourite, and very, very quick round there I thought. I was also very impressed by the Corsa VXR for a relatively small engine (compared to the others) it held its own very well, and in places I felt it was able to hold a better line (albeit at a slightly slower pace). Probably did 25 laps in the end, plus we got refreshments throughout the day and lunch at 12.30/1pm.

Brilliant fun though, loads of photos on http://www.vxrevent.co.uk

All in all, I thought it was great value for 4 hours on site with no risk of damaging your own car! Highly recommended to everyone next year!

Oh, and I met Matt Neal, really nice bloke and fucking quick in a standard Astra round there

In the wet skid pan there is a plate in the ground which senses a car driving over it. Once it recognises the rear wheels passing it kicks the plate either left or right (randomly) and spins the car which the driver has to try and control.

Compared to a Silverstone 'experience' day this was completely different.
Brand new cars (like a Corsa I went in that had only done 274 miles ) and you're completely free to boot the cars and go as fast as you can. The Silverstone day really held you back, but in this the drivers (mostly professional racing guys) just pushed you and the car further and further. Mazin

I went to watch the one at Brands Hatch, looked great fun, wished I'd done it as it looked like they were being allowed to put their foot down. I wouldn't be happy with only being allowed half throttle which is why I didn't book it.

Nope, full throttle is encourage when you need it. Watching the speedo in the VXR8 rise through 80, 90, 100, 110, 120 is just awesome up to the limiter.

For anyone who might be interested, I've just found out there are still places available at Croft mid-July and Thruxton next Thursday and Friday.

See here for how to book - http://www.vauxhall.co.uk/vx/microsite/vxrtrackday/vxr_trackday.html
