I had a R reg (mk6?) Si 1.8 petrol, it handled like a boat, the seat gave me back ache after 20 minutes, but standard its comfy over bumps and road noise is quite low, engine pulled ok too.
Cheap to buy and parts are everywhere, I wouldnt recommend one after my experience with mine though

They're alright, will work if you want it to and always plenty of parts available.
Quite juicey though, Kirstys Dads old 1.8 16v used to do 250 miles to 40 odd litres.

Its actually at some dodgey place that sells cars, fuck knows how they get the cars and is based in the middle of no where with breakers yards galore. Do have some pretty good cars there! Clio 172, Vectra 3.2 V6 GSi etc..

They are so SHIT!
I went from a 1.4 sri nova to a 1.6 si Escort (P reg), and straight onto a 1.4 corsa sport as the escort was shite on everything, fuel, performance etc.
