I have two days ago handed in my resignation at work, which I have been at for 6 years now. I have done this to work with my dad on our already quite successful family business. He has too much work for one man to do and asked me to come on board as co-director. Its working with apple mac computers, installing networks at business', fixing mac's, email and web hosting etc etc.
I wont have my guaranteed wage every month now but see it as an oppurtunity to do a job where the possiblilites for success are endless. This is all with a view to me taking over the business in the future.
What would you lots have done? I'm interested for opinions

Depending on whether the company is already in a position to maintain another salary as well as increase it's ability to make profit during a reccesion period then I'd say it comes down to your personal judgement. Without looking at the company's past books and it's future order books then it is impossible to give an accurate answer.
It would be career suicide to jack in a steady wage and secure job for self employment as you will find it difficult getting loans and mortgages if the business suffers due to loss of business.
I have run a business before which showed huge potential and had a sound business plan but due to reasons beyond my control and reasons that were seen as unlikely to happen, but did, the business went sour and I was personally left with great debts.
I very nearly had to go bankrupt, but due to my pride, I regained employment, working 16 hour days towards the folding of the business to repay all my debts.
The hardest thing about being your own boss, is the fact you never are. You are always answering to the customer, they are the boss, and they do not have the same reservations as an employer, if the job isn't done right, they will not pay, and you get no money that month.
I wish you the best of luck in your future, but I couldn't give a straight answer due to the numerous variables that you can't provide.
I would rather lose by a mile because i built my own car, than win by an inch because someone else built it for me.

haha very good answer steven. The company is doing well in the recessiona dn was doing so before hand also. Hopefully by injecting another worker to help lighten the load on my dad will allow us to concentrate on finding ways to gain many more customers on top of the too many the business has already. I am looking forward to it, thats the main thing I supopose, I will have a better quality of life as long as I work hard at it. Hopefully, there will always be a need for mac engineers and we will thrive in years to come. Never know, might sell the company in ten years for a million. :-)

Cant work part time as my current employer wouldnt allow it. I wouldnt be able to reduce my hours etc at my current employer and I need to not only work for my dad but also be trained by him on how to do his job. Its a big commitment with alot of responsibility and some risk involved but could pay off big time.

You have obviously watched this business grow from the start, and a bonus for your Dad will be a trusted employee who can continue in his shoes while he has more time to maintain and grow your current customer base.

If my family had a successfull business, id want to be a part of it. So stick in & I hope it works for you.
Several mates of mine had this opportunity & blew it, basically through being a fuckup/dropout/not interested, including one whos old man is the sole owner of a multi-million pound company - what an idiot!! Hope it goes well
