Which also puts more pressure on independant car dealers who are already having it tough at the minute let alone when everyone walks in demanding £2k for a car that isn't worth a bean.

Lets really support small and local businesses, well done again Labour.

Government doesnt care, they dont make a big enough contribution in VAT and income tax.. The big car manufacturers pump BILLIONS into the economy so they dont give a rats arse about Bobs Secondhand car lot.

I think it's good and bad. Good that the average joe can finally get a better deal on their old banger.

But in fairness the second hand market is poop as it is at the moment and if say by 2011 theres hardly any "bangers" left, how are people passing their test going to afford the cost of a newish(er) car AND insurance

France did this a while back, 2nd market boomed for about 3 months (i think) then came out worse

TBH there's much better areas for the government to focus on than this. For example while the pound is so weak against the euro we should be incentivising people to open ice cream stands by the coast, cafe's to start selling full french breakfasts etc

Motorists buying new cars will get a £2,000 discount if they trade in cars that are more than 10 years old, the chancellor has announced.

Alistair Darling unveiled the scheme - which will run until March 2010 - to help the struggling car industry.

He said he wanted to help the UK's motor industry "which has been one of Britain's success stories".

But critics have said the scheme could hit second-hand car prices and will do little to safeguard UK jobs.

Welcome boost

A similar scheme to the one announced by the chancellor was introduced in Germany earlier this year.

It resulted in a 40% rise in German car sales last month, in sharp contrast to the UK where sales slumped more than 30% compared with a year earlier.

Carmakers and dealers hope the UK experience will echo the German one.

"The government has taken the opportunity to boost the new car market, while simultaneously helping consumers buy a new car," said Paul Williams, chairman of the Retail Motor Industry Federation.

RAC Foundation director Professor Stephen Glaister said: "If the scheme leads to a reduction in the average age of the national car fleet then this has to be good for road safety as more modern cars will have a wider range of safety features built in."

The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) has said the scheme would also help replace heavily polluting cars with more efficient and less polluting new ones, though the scheme is open for buyers of any new car, not merely small, efficient ones.

But the car rental and leasing body, BVRLA, whose members supply 2.5 million company vehicles each year, said it was concerned about the impact on the second-hand market.

"Unfortunately, our ministers have chosen to follow the German model, which has been widely criticised for decimating the country's used car industry," said BVRLA chief executive John Lewis, who predicted that companies would hold on to their cars longer rather than selling them cheap.

The BVRLA is concerned this could result in a fall in demand for new cars from companies that would cancel out the rise in demand from consumers.

Mr Lewis was also concerned that the initiative would do little to safeguard jobs in the UK motor manufacturing industry since most cars bought here are made abroad.

Spare parts suppliers and garages could also suffer from a fall in demand resulting from the mass-removal of old cars from the market.

"Currently the vast majority of cars are still on the road at 10 years old. Indeed at 14 years old, half are still on the road," said Professor Glaister of the RAC Foundation.

"The scrappage scheme announced today risks consigning a lot of perfectly good, and relatively clean, vehicles to the dustbin."

is there a minimum spend on the new car to get the £2000 trade in?
what's the cheapest car on the market at the moment? must be £5-6k?

I don't really see how it works.

Is it a progressive thing? Like up to £2000 dependant on the value/emmissions of the car you plan to buy?

You get £2000 voucher.

Great, i've gone from £0 debt, to £7000 debt, in a recession, where rates are high and I may loose my job.

Another great idea by Labour....

Yeah but if people stop buying cars altogether then it means a lot of places will shut. Chances of them ever reopening are slim

It's a good idea, but I think it's massively flawed. Lots of independant places will suffer I'm sure

I'm really hoping they start to offer something for company cars, a nice reduction in tax for those would be lovely right about now

This is totally going to bump the prices up for us 2nd hand dealers!

Imagine how many people who want a new car, are purposly going to go out and purchase a banger jsut to get the £2k.

Nissan Pixo @ £5995, so £3995 in theory with the scrappage scheme.

This whole episode is very short sighted, and what it is actually doing is encouraging new car buyers into cars that will attract the higher VED/RFL than their current pre-2001 car...creating a nice revenue stream for the government.

It seems theyve thought around the possible loop holes. One thing I have thought though is that you could completely gut a car of its interior and pretty much everything else other than what you need to get it going and sell all the parts, then the 2k for whats left of the car on top...

When i heard this, i was quite chuffed.

Since my dad has a brand new car arriving soon, and he's a bit miffed that he couldn't get any discount, i thought, why not trade in/scrap the Accord. Bought it for £2750 about 4 years ago. If i could get 2k for it now, that would be a cracking deal. My dad was on board, but then i found out, the Accord was registered in June, so it will only be 8 years and 10 months old but the time the new car arrives.

What a bugger!!! Missed out by two months.

Theres only 1 other car thats older, but its worth a wee bit more then 2k. Although i did suggest it to my dad for a laugh
