Im pondering on buying a car that needs trailored away as the top end is ticking/knocking, and its not wise to drive all the way home (from Wigan to Dumfries).

Would it be daft/badgeristic to push/drive the car round the corner, and then phone the RAC? Im a member so in theory they should tow me home.....

The car is taxed and MOT'd and id have it insured too...

Exactamundo.

I used to work at a salvage yard and alot of dodgys would buy a written off car with engine damage, push it to the road end, cut the timing belt and phone the RAC....

Check you have the right package - I know on some policies they will only recover 10 miles.

Plus you have to convince them to do it. If they get on to it then you're stuck miles away having wasted the journey down there.

What it is out of interest?

Ive been towed 13 miles by them before...

Its a Nova GSi. I could cut the Tbelt as the head has to come off anyway...

As Ian says, check your policy. I know when i rewnewed my policy i made sure Green Flag would tow me back home or in my case to my local Peugeot garage where i know day or night i can get the car dropped off at and looked at once the mechanics are working.

If your RAC package covers you then why not.
Just say youve bought it sold as seen if they start asking questions.
Your paying them the money so they have to do their job.

Im with the AA through my bank account and ive got the top package and i could break down anywhere in the UK and they will tow me home/to a garage, whatever i request.

Remember timing belts don't snap with a nice clean cut though.

I did this once, was having problems with my 106 (no comments please ) so I drove it about 3 miles away at about 2.30am and rang the AA, they came out and fixed it.

Get a road trailer and do it properly. I did this when picking up a car from St Albans to Southampton with a blown head gasket. As its MOT'd and taxed though you could drive it but i wouldnt risk causing even more damage to the engine than it already has.
