I found out today that my RS2000 Escort is a cat D write off. How do write off catergories work.
Am i right to assume this was just minor panel damage and not too much to worry about?

Yeah. Cat D doesn't need an identity check before it can go back on the road; it's the less serious one.

Could be anything, it's not as clear cut as that although somebody will be along soon to tell you it is.

It'll generally be worth about 2/3rds of a non cat one.

A lot of people seem to not care, I would be bothered.

There will be evidence of a repair somewhere.

D's the lowest one.

Could have just been a wing & a bumper depending on its value at the time.

Its not a huge problem, your car will be fine/safe etc.

The car is an early 94 L plate. Was registered just over 3 years ago

If it drove straight, and the price had been adjusted accordingly then no, I'd not worry.
My Laguna is a Cat C, and I bought that while it was still a write-off.

1994 car put on the register in 2006 means it was 12 years old.

Cost of repairs would have needed to exceed usually 60% of the value of the car, which considering repairing very minor panel damage would have probably done that, that would be my suspicion.

Or if has been stolen and recovered only after the claim has been settled.

Either way it isn't too much to worry about if you've properly checked the car over in light of those findings, but you will need to declare it if asked when you sell it.

A HPI should tell you whether it was crashed or stolen/recovered.

I would rather lose by a mile because i built my own car, than win by an inch because someone else built it for me.

Actually, There is no obligation to disclose a cat D car even if selling in the trade. Cat C repaired cars must be disclosed to any potential buyers and it will be recorded on the V5 form too. Cat D repaired cars are not disclosed on the V5.

You need to tell them if asked.
