As title. Some may remember a thread I made about a mates Ibiza Cupra I was hoping would come up cheap due to him having a new car, but the dealer offered him a good PX price, so that went out the window!

Now, I still want a new car (who doesn't ) and want a bit of poke alongside a little bit of an upmarket feel after coming from a Corsa. Don't want it to stand out or be too boy racery due to where I live. I don't want a twitchy handler, something grippy and planted at speed. I want something a tad bigger than the Corsa... and I keep coming back to the Golf.

Ok, they're a little overpriced I guess... but what do people think of them for the money? 3k absolute TOP budget, the less the better!

I'd plan: 40mm eibach's, KO3S, remap, exhaust, wheels maybe.. about it really lol.

Worth a look or is there a better alternative to get a 200BHP car which fits all the criteria above? I'm 27 so don't want anything "chavvy".

Only other option really seems to be a Clio 172 but it's still small I guess.

You would be hard fetched getting a decent nick gti and then modding to that spec for 3k tbh mate.

Try and get one of the gti turbos that were built after 02 (engine code AUM) as they should already have the ko3s on them. But not sure if they'll be in the budget.

Handling also isn't the best on them either and will need numerous bushes replaced depending on milage which can cost a couple hundred altogether.

Thought about a leon cupra, pretty much the same car but better value for money, although im not a fan of the interior!

Cheers for the reply, any mods would come with time, and not included in the 3k budget

I aint too keen on the Leon's really and wanted a 3 door ideally... But yeah they do seem ok value

I just can't find a car which suits me and is worth aiming for really, I don't wanna spend thousands and thousands (or at least above 3k) as I live on a chav infested council estate and would cry like Elton John if some fucker did any serious damage lol, I'm paranoid enough about a seemingly worthless Corsa!

If they're not included in the budget then you should be ok mate

They started putting the AUM engines in the tubby GTI's from late 2001 onwards most of these cam with the K03s turbo as standard but some where still mapped to 150 but others were realeased with 180 like the Anni's. The newer the golf the better your chances of it having a KO3s but im not sure how much they're going for tbh.

But on the other hand the AGU with the smaller turbo is said to have bigger inlet ports on the head, coupled with the KO3s conversion they may make slightly better power.

Can understand what you mean about the Leon's being a 5 door but they're still quite decent looking. But naturally i prefer the shape of the golf

Also got the audi 1.8t's and some of those even had the haldex system aswell, but i cant see them being cheaper to buy than an equivilant golf tbh.

Not sure what other cars to suggest so someone else will have to chop in there

Think I'd get a newer Golf for the monies than an A3 and the old ones look a bit bland to me, so 1-0 to the Golf for that one in my eyes

I do quite like Octavias and that one looks nuts!!!

Cheers for the info on the engines Fro

You can pick up an early Mk4 Gti turbo for as little as £1500 now.A simple remap will see between 180-205bhp depending on where you go.Spend the rest on the handling and other bits and its do-able on your budget.
Im thinking about a Mk4 Turbo when my mk3 sells.
