YOu know, the "you car must be insuranced, weather you drive it or not, if its on axle stands or not" etc etc.
What a load of shit.
What about the tousands of people like us who might have long term projects/
What about the people that the "credit crunch" has forced their 2.0 Mondeo to be worth 20p yet cannot afford to run it, so SORN it and leave it on their drive?
Money grabbing cunts if you ask me.

The government has annouced new measures which will make it an offence to own an unisured vehicle, even if you don't drive it.

You can get a different type of insurance where you don't drive it. No idea what it's called but as you're not driving it it doesn't cost much a year to do it.
If they were trying to say you have to insure it fully as if you were driving it then that woiuld be an issue

So if your car is not SORNed, you can expect an Insurance reminder much the same as a Tax reminder?
I don't see a great problem with it tbh, if your car is on the road, it should be taxed and insured, simple.

But Ash, they seem to be making it out as if a car exisits in your name, regardless of if its taxed, mot'd, it HAS to be insured.

Exactly, I'm looking at taking on a project which I want to be off the road. Why should I have to insure it if it's off the road on my land?

You need insurance if it's on the road currently.

Which isnt a problem.
When you need to insure a car thats off the road, up in the air on axle stands with no engine, thats the problem

If it's not taxed it should be SORNed.And SORN gets you off the insurance thing.
It's being done so the Police don't have to go out looking for uninsured drivers, technically this should be a good thing as they can focus on finding bad drivers. In reality though, their time will probably just be put into more speed checks.
It's getting very Big Brotherish to drive in England now, I'm surprised it's being tolerated, certainly wouldn't be in America or Europe.

No, I really dont.
What about selling/buying a car? Overlap period with one insurance policy?
Ash - i'm saying they seem to be saying that if you have it, SORN or not, they want it insured. If not, fine, then crushed.

If your throwin loads of money then ok fair play.
If your doing a cheap and cheerful project, providing its locked and measures are taken to make sure it isnt stolen (battery out etc), then why would youw ant to insure it? What a waste of money

i think its a bit silly, if its your land then why do you need to insure it, if its gets stolen your problem. I had my car on my drive for 3 weeks with no insurance before i sold it. but it still had tax an mot till september. i didnt see the problem, it didnt move for those 3weeks and all i did was start it up leave it runining for 20 mins to half hour let it warm up then cool down once or twice a week.

No they're not. If it's SORNed, it doesn't need to be insured:
quote: Under the new laws, the DVLA would work closely with the car insurance industry to identify those whose vehicles are not insured, or covered by a Statutory Off Road Notification (SORN) declaration.
Either insure, or SORN.

They will never be able to force you to insure a vehicle that is off the road.. This will probably just mean if you've got tax you have to have insurance, if your insurance lapses while the car is still taxed no doubt they'll make you surrender the tax and SORN the vehicle, that way the government gets to pocket the difference in your outstanding tax

If it's specialist insurance for cars that are just sitting there not being used and its considerably cheaper than if you're driving it about I'm all for it.
