I hear 3 points are valid on your licence for 3 years but cannot be written off until 4. Does this mean that they need to be declared to Insurance etc. for 4 years? For example: If I got 3 point 3 years ago to the day, they're no longer valid as a conviction yeh? Do I need to send my licence away to have them removed or is it an automatic process?

you need to send it away to get them removed. although if they have expired it doesnt matter if theyre still printed on it. you have to tell insurance for 5 years. mine expired in 2001. seen as it costs to have them removed, ive left them on it.

But if I leave them on then get further points does it still add up to a ban or will it be on the database that they've expired?

they have a date on them when they expire. they dont count anymore once passed that date. even if theyre on the lisence itself.

if you get more, send it away then and get the old expired ones removed for free.......we pay the dvla enough as it is. sod paying more just to have a line of text removed off a driving lisence.

Hence why they normally ask the question. Have you had any motoring convictions in the past 5 years

With ins companies it varies, some would like to know about them within the last 3 years, some like to know anything in the last 5.
