A topic for the people more in the know about engines/racing.

As a general rule I try to never go full throttle or above 3000rpm till my oil is at 90deg (yes oil temp not coolant). Went I went for a thrash earlier the oil got upto about 105deg. Does this sound about right? (ext temp around 13deg)

Also does a car need to be cooled down? say if you go out for a proper drive should the last 3 or 4 miles (or whatever) be nice and steady to let the car cool down again?

Oil can go to a hell of a high temperature, so I think that's alright tbh.

cooling a car down....

Its a good idea to drive a turbo car easily for a mile or so before stopping, or let it idle for 10secs or so. The engine alone (no turbo) should be fine, but giving a gentle run to a stop wont harm it.

I've seen temps over 120C on track before.... not good

From what I know oil should be upto temp around 75-80. My car sits below 90 most of the time.

a lot will also depend on the oil in the car Use shit, and it'll degrade at a far lower temp (more than likely)

I have an oil temp gauge in my car.

Fully warmed it sits at about 80 degrees. I've had it up to ABOUT 95. The "warning zone" starts at 120.

Not that I know of, even when oil temps up at 105, coolant temp is still usually at 90. Also coolant warms up quicker than oil

Mine has taken longer, depends what the driving is. Town driving it will rise a lot quicker Aroads will take longer. Like the other weekend I went from my house to donnington services which is about 12miles, the oil only just reached 90deg when I got to the services, the coolant had got to 90deg after a mile or 2

but.......... but but but

If it is overheating (its not by the way) address why! Unless you are sitting at constant high revs you shouldnt be getting high temps if all is ok.

Oil Coolers - make sure you fit a thermostatically controlled one. You could end up with the reverse problem, esp at this time of year. Oil too cold and you cant get it up to temp.

how big are your beans openended question.

Answer will depend on you oil spec etc etc. Hazzard a guess for you and start getting concerned at 115c.

I've seen 130c before on track, so let off called it a day and changed the oil asap afterwards.
