1.4 sport will keep up with the 1.6 with a new inlet manifold and full exhaust.well mine does anyway

get a 1.4 and put power box and 4-2-1 exhaust manifold on it and it will give you a fair bit more low down grunt. Need to put a exhaust on mine for this same reason of low end torque. Had mine 3 years now and its only ever gone wrong once which was the oil pump went pop but i was hammering the knackers off of it at the time

306 1.9 turbo diesel group 5. Can be tweeked for free, up to 115-120bhp and feel quick if you are used to a slow car even if they aren't what you would consider fast by any means.
Cheap to buy, good mpg and loads of spares at the scrap yard, definitely worth thinking about if you aren't far up the insurance ladder.

No but my little 8v were slower then his and he used to race me, now I've got more cylinders and power he doesn't bother
