There must be a trick to this? Or do you just pray and pull? 
I've got the front off but i cant seperate the clear bit from the black bit, it looks very fragile!

heat them up also works quite well if you dont have a hammer.

The WHOLE front is held on with four clips but im talking about the clear plastic half of that

on the 1.6's they just clip off, but on the others they are glued on!?!?

mine was glued on and i used a stanley knife and took my time with it and it comes off.
be very patient and it will come off no problem.

I used a very fine cutting disc on my Dremel on one end so I could just open it up enough to slip in the dial rings 

I've had the rings floating around for YEARS and I broked up a Corsa B today so I thought I'd use the clocks
