Found some pics on my friends Facebook that some of you might enjoy. It's of our race car from last year

Some CAD, I think this is just a mock-up to show what the livery would look like rather than the stuff to make engineering drawings and G-Code.

Some very expensive moulding foam. These are offcuts from Land Rover...

... and after they have been through a very large CNC router

Moulds were then taken from the CNC'd foam blanks so the parts could be replicated in carbon fibre. The structure of the car was laid up using carbon fibre on its own, carbon fibre and foam and in some places carbon fibre and aluminium honeycomb.

After the carbon is laid up it gets sealed in a vacuum bag to pressurise it...

Then it all gets cooked in an oven to allow the resin to cure.

Finished product

An absolute fortune if the stuff was all paid for in money! Most of the materials come for free - the carbon fibre we use are offcuts from the production of Koenigsegg bodies. The design and manufacture is all done by students as projects so that's free.

bit better than ours, think it was put together with offcuts of steel girder and some sticky back plastic..... well i can't talk cos i made a model aircraft, which weighed far too much and was over engineered thanks to our tutor!

i recognise phill scott, i am friends with him.
i was part of the sheffield hallam #83 team during the 2007 championship.

all credit to aston university and their car, the workmanship and design is of a high standard.
i vaguely remember an exciting concept with regards to the car's suspension set-up.

i miss formula student; it occupied the best and possibly worst voluntary evenings and weekends spent during my first year.
i have an entire thread with regards to the #83 sheffield hallam car development. i never thought anybody would be interested.

that modelling foam is crazy expensive. mate of mine works for bentley and got some offcuts but even they sell for silly money in shops. v.good to work with though!

Stick them up matty. It is pretty interesting stuff seeing something go from CAD to an actual car!
