Just been reading the two posts about people spining out on slipery roads...

Obviously slow down and read the conditions is one solution but if you are caught out going a little to fast around a slippery bend and the back end decides it wants to find the nearest ditch/lamppost you might think the best thing to do is to become some kind of Colin McRae rally hero, give it loads of opposite lock and power through it.. Now thats all well and good if

A) your car is RWD and
B) you have a clue.

The problem with a situation like this is our human brains really cant deal with what is going on so you end up panicking so you just make things worse and a potential kurbed wheel, dented rear quarter suddenly becomes a rolled car and a trip to A&E on a spine board.

The first thing you should do is dip the clutch, this helps the car regain ballance and traction, once the clutch is dipped you can back off the throttle (keep the clutch pressed though!).

DO NOT just back off the throttle, this just causes the engine to go slower than the front wheels are spining which just means you've now lost traction on the front and rear wheels.

DO NOT slam on the brakes; Panic will make you do this and your brain will think its a good idea but in reality it will just make things a hundred times worse.. ABS equipt cars will be better in this situation but its by no means the solution.

Ok so now you are sliding sideways with your foot on the clutch.. You want to apply a small amount of oposite lock to try and straighten things up, if you are calm and collected about this you will succeed but if you get a little over zelous and you end up fighting with the car you need to have what I call "A god moment", this is where you know you are genuinely f**ked, anything you do is bound to make things worse and its time to see if there is a god:

This method is carried out by letting the steering wheel go slack in your hands while still keeping the clutch pedal pressed, this allows all of the tyres to atleast have a chance of naturally regaining traction with the road If you feel your arse hole getting tighter thats a good sign and its now time to grab hold of that steering wheel again

If all else fails and you can see the ditch/lamppost/wall coming at you still just brace for impact and look forward to the free ride to the hospital..

With understeering, lift off gradually, look where you wanna go (to do with the brain), apply correct lock and rock the wheel (encourages grip). When the car regains grip, count to three and GENTLY apply the power so it doesnt happen again.

Thats what I've been told... for FWD cars?

You can never really teach someone how to correct a slide, that comes with practice and instinct.

But what you can do is tell someone how to have the best chance
